Code-named P2, the 286, i286, or 80286 was released on February 1, 1982, and informally called the Intel 286. The 80286 had 134,000 transistors, ran at clock speeds from 4 MHz to 12 MHz, and was the first processor to be backward compatible with previous versions. Designed for multitasking, the 80286 was widely used between 1984 and the early 1990s.
