8K resolution

Often shortened to 8K, the term 8K resolution refers to any display with nearly 8,000 horizontal pixels. More specifically, their dimensions are 7680 x 4320 pixels. 8K displays have sixteen times as many pixels as those that are FHD (Full High Definition), or 1920 x 1080, at about 33 million versus two million.

8K resolution in media

8K resolution currently has few applications and limited content for a few reasons. The first is data size. A two-hour movie in 8K requires about 1,000 GB (one TB) of storage; a Blu-ray disc can hold about 50 GB. Even most common computer hard drives only have a capacity of one or two terabytes.

Another roadblock is, files this large would require very high bandwidth (for all intents and purposes, Internet speed) to stream from services like Netflix. With computers (monitors), you'd need an exceptionally powerful machine to render animations, videos, and especially computer games with so many pixels.

Finally, as with any other cutting-edge technology, devices that display this resolution are quite expensive.
