AR lens
Alternatively called a face filter or Snapchat filter, an AR lens is a camera effect that adds AR (Augmented Reality) elements to your photos in real-time. On social media apps, these AR lenses can interact with the user, allowing them to activate motion graphics and effects by performing actions like closing their eyes or moving their mouth. AR lenses are frequently used to make entertaining cosmetic changes, such as aging or de-aging, changing the hair color, or adding cartoon effects to the photo's subject.
After being popularized by Snapchat, other social networks, like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, added similar AR features. Video chat apps like FaceTime include AR lenses. With the preset filters included with the apps, you can also browse user-created lenses, which feature some very creative games and pop culture references.
AR lenses, especially in the case of Snapchat, are sometimes criticized for setting unrealistic beauty standards. Even face filters with comedic effects, such as the "dog lens" pictured here, are known to smooth and adjust the user's face, removing blemishes and adding the appearance of makeup.
