The term Athlon refers to several popular computer processors from AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) known for their strong performance in multimedia applications. First introduced in 1999 as a high-performance desktop processor, the Athlon quickly gained popularity because of its high clock speeds and low price compared to its Intel counterparts. In 2003, AMD released the Athlon 64, one of the first 64-bit desktop processors to market.

Athlon specifications

Originally, the Athlon processor supported a 266 MHz front-side bus, PC2100 DDR (Double Data Rate) memory, and ran at speeds of 1 GHz to 1.33 GHz. There was also a version with a 200 MHz front-side bus, support for PC1600 DDR memory, and clock speeds of 900 MHz to 1.3 GHz.
