Short for Amazon Web Services, AWS is a cloud services platform operated by Amazon that began operation in 2006. AWS allows companies to tap into Amazon's network infrastructure, use their servers to scale up to any size, and only pay for what they use. For example, a business experiencing heavy traffic during a holiday season can increase the RAM (Random-Access Memory) and CPUs (central processing units) dedicated to their AWS instance, or upgrade the storage. When the holiday rush is over, the business can scale down to a less expensive cloud service plan.
