Bigtable is a proprietary, massively scalable, low-latency NoSQL data storage system developed by Google. First developed and introduced in 2004, it is used internally at Google to store data for critical applications, including Google Search, Gmail, and Google Workspace.

In May 2015, Bigtable was made available to the public as an optional component of GCP (Google Cloud Platform).

Features

  • Latency under 10 ms for most operations.
  • Automatic replication, backing up, and synchronizing of data to regions across the globe.
  • An open-source, industry-standard interface, HBase API (Application Programming Interface).
  • Native integration with Apache Hadoop, Google BigQuery, and Google Cloud Dataflow.
  • Encryption of all stored ("at-rest") and transmitted ("in-flight") data.

Trivia

Bigtable is also the name of a central dining commons at Google's Mountain View campus.
