How to determine the version of macOS on a computer

Since it was first created by Apple, macOS has gone through many version changes. Knowing which version is currently on your iMac or MacBook is useful. For instance, it helps you decide if an update is worth installing or when it's time to get a new computer. The next section shows you how to determine the version of macOS running on a computer.

Determine macOS version

  1. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click the Apple icon to open the Apple menu.
  2. In the Apple menu, choose About this Mac.
