How to find the type of computer modem
Modern computers (built in the last 20 years) utilize a NIC (Network Interface Card) or Wi-Fi adapter that connects to a router for network access. However, old computers, such as those running Windows 95, 98, or even XP, may have an internal or external dial-up modem. If you'd like to know the make and model of your computer's modem, follow the instructions below.
This page shows you how to determine which modem is built into your computer. It doesn't tell you how to identify a broadband modem or router.
How to find the type of computer modem in Windows
The instructions below show you how to identify your modem's make and model number through Microsoft Windows.
- Click Start and select Programs.
- Click Accessories and select System Information.
- In the System Information window, click the + symbol next to Components.
- Look for Modem; it may be under the Input subcategory.
- The right side of the window displays complete information about the modem, including its make and model.
If nothing is listed, you don't have a modem installed in or connected to the computer.
Alternative method for determining the modem type
Another method to determine the modem in a computer is to open the case and physically inspect it. Many internal modems have the manufacturer, model number, and speed printed on the device.
Before opening your computer, look at the back of the computer and verify you see a card with two RJ-11 connections for a phone line. If these two connections are not seen, you don't have an internal modem.
If you cannot locate the manufacturer or a model number, but do see an FCC identification number, use it to perform an FCC search. For additional information about these numbers, see our FCC (Federal Communications Commission) definition page.
Product listing or specifications
If you are trying to list all the specific information about your computer modem, noting the manufacturer, type, model, and speed is sufficient. Below is an example of how this may look.
