How to install an app on an iPhone or iPad

To use a service like Spotify or Google Maps on your Apple device, you must install a third-party app. On an Apple iPhone (smartphone) or iPad (tablet), the process to install an app is the same.

Install an app on an iPhone or iPad

Follow the steps below to install a free or paid app from the App Store on an iOS or iPadOS device.

1. Go to your home screen by pressing the home button (iPhone 8 or older) or swiping up from the bottom of the screen. (iPhone X or newer)
2. Tap the blue App Store icon.
3. Tap the Search option at the bottom-right of the screen.
4. Type the name of an app into the search text field.
5. Choose the app you want from the search results.
6. For free apps, tap the Get button. If the app is not free, the Get button is replaced by the price of the app.
7. If you are purchasing the app, follow the instructions to enter your payment info or use an iTunes gift card.
8. When prompted, enter your Apple ID password.
9. Tap Sign In.
10. Wait for the app to install.
11. When complete, an Open button appears next to the app on the App Store page, and an app icon is placed on your phone's home screen.
