Data plan

Updated: 11/12/2023 by Computer Hope

With a mobile network operator (e.g., AT&T or Verizon), a broadband cap, data cap, or data plan dictates the terms of broadband data usage each month on a smartphone or other wireless device. Data plans provide the consumer with access to the Internet, e-mail, apps, and other services that require an online connection for their phone. Each plan varies in cost, depending on the selected allotment of data.

Caution

Going over your allowed data can result in data throttling and additional fees.

Tip

One of the best ways to lower your monthly cell phone bill is to reduce your data plan. Examine your bill and see how much data you are using each month. If you are paying for 8 GB, but are using less than 1 GB, you could reduce your data plan to the lowest plan covering your usage needs (e.g., 2 GB). Doing this can save you hundreds every year.

Data cap with Wi-Fi

The data that's part of the data plan is cellular data and not Wi-Fi data. When at home or at the office, if your smartphone connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi, it does not increase your data usage.
