Data set
Data set may refer to any of the following:
1. Also sometimes called data series, a data set or dataset describes a collection of data. This data may be contained in a single file (e.g., a CSV (comma-separated values) file), a collection of files, or tabular data contained in a database. For example, a good collection of data sets is on the U.S. Government's Open Data website, which contains over 233,955 datasets.
Collecting and viewing data helps generate statistics, trends, patterns, and other useful information that a statistician or a program can use to help make decisions. For example, a city might have a data set of every crime that happens in a city. With this data, a police department can decide where the city needs to have its police officers patrol more often to help reduce overall crime.
2. Data set is sometimes used when describing a file.
3. Data set was an early term used by AT&T to describe a telephone modem. However, it is no longer used in this context.
