DES

data encryption standard

Short for Data Encryption Standard and sometimes called the DEA (Data Encryption Algorithm), DES is an encryption standard first approved as a federal US standard in 1977. Today, IBM DES is widely supplanted by the more advanced AES (Advanced Encryption Standard).
