E-waste

Short for electronic waste, e-waste describes the material generated by electronic equipment such as monitors, computers, and mobile devices. E-waste also encompasses the materials used to manufacture electronic devices as well.

In 2005,‌ the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive introduced a symbol with a wheelie bin or trash can marked out by an X with a bold underline. This symbol indicates the product should not be thrown away but instead sent back to the manufacturer for disposal. The directive is a European community directive that was first created in 2002 to help deal with the environmental impacts of electronic waste.
