EAS (Emergency Alert System) is a public warning system run by the US to notify its citizens of important emergency information (e.g., weather, AMBER alerts, and other civil emergencies). In the United States, EAS became operational on January 1, 1997, and replaced the EBS (Emergency Broadcast System); the system is still used today to broadcast television and radio alerts. Messages sent over cell phones and pagers are handled by WEA (Wireless Emergency Alerts).

Note

Other countries have systems similar to the United States EAS. For example, Alert Ready (Canada), J-Alert (Japan), and SASMEX (Mexico) are examples of such systems.
