Short for Enhanced Graphics Adapter, EGA is a de facto video standard created by IBM in 1984. It has a higher resolution (640 x 350) and more colors (16 from a palette of 64) than its earlier CGA (Color Graphics Adapter) counterpart.
While the Enhanced Graphics Adapter was replaced by Video Graphics Adapter (VGA) technology in 1987, the newer standard maintains backward compatibility with EGA.
