Emboss

Emboss may refer to any of the following:

1. With computer software, emboss is a visual effect that gives the appearance of a raised surface. For example, someone may use a graphics program to emboss a square object, making it appear to be a button that could be pressed. This visual effect is achieved by giving two sides a dark shadow and the other sides highlights, like a real 3-D object.

In programs like Adobe Photoshop, embossing can be done to a layer by clicking Layer, Layer Style, and then Bevel & Emboss or through the emboss filter.

2. With printing, embossing is a printing technique that gives what's printed a raised surface that can be felt with your fingers. For example, many credit cards emboss the credit card numbers to make them tactile and less likely to fade away after years of use.

Embossing is achieved in many ways, depending on the material being printed upon. On paper and cloth, embossing powders with heat guns and special embossing paper may be used.
