Erase head
Updated: 10/01/2023 by Computer Hope
An erase head is a component utilized in various magnetic recording devices, such as cassette tape decks, reel-to-reel tape recorders, and other types of magnetic media, like tape drives. It removes any previously-stored magnetic signals from these devices' storage media, making them ready to receive new audio or data recordings.
Typically, the erase head consists of a coil of wire and a magnetic core. When the device's erase function is activated, an electrical current is sent through the coil, generating a magnetic field around it. This field is used to demagnetize the particles on the magnetic medium, effectively erasing any existing audio or data signals.
