Fax modem
Sometimes called a send-receive fax modem, a fax modem is a hardware device that transmits facsimile (fax) documents on a computer over a telephone line. Originally, fax modems were a great way to move documents quickly over long distances compared to snail mail (regular post). Now, they are largely obsolete due to e-mail and other electronic messaging technologies. That said, fax modems are sometimes used to transmit documents when a hard copy or signature is required.
While fax modems usually operate over traditional analog phone lines, they can also function through digital methods such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services, which use the Internet for fax transmission. Some fax modems are external devices that connect to your computer via USB (universal serial bus) or serial ports, while others are internal, slotting directly onto a computer's motherboard.
