GameSpy was a large gaming network started in October 1999 by Mark Surfas that contained information, reviews, updates, and add-ons and helped connect gamers online. GameSpy later merged with IGN in 2004.
On Feb. 21, 2013, GameSpy announced that because of a business decision, Ziff Davis (owner of IGN) decided to stop any development of GameSpy and shut down the GameSpy network. In April 2014, Glu, the new owner of the GameSpy servers, announced it would shut down the remaining operational GameSpy servers on May 31, 2014. The shut down caused a lot of older games like Battlefield 2, Crysis, Star Wars: Battlefront, and many games on Nintendo to lose their online play.
