GNU Hurd

GNU Hurd, also known as The Hurd, is an operating system microkernel created by the GNU Project. Its development began in 1990 out of a desire to create an open source, free software alternative to the Unix kernel. Today, it is used by operating systems that prefer its efficiency, high level of customization, and the modular nature of its microkernel.

Operating systems that use the GNU Hurd kernel include Arch Hurd, Debian GNU/Hurd, and NixOS.
