An IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) standard that helped classify all five competing parallel port standards under one standard. This parallel port mode is often defined as Auto in computers today and enables the parallel port to configure itself to the best option. Below is a listing of the five standards defined in IEEE 1284.
- Centronics mode
- Nibble mode
- Byte mode
- EPP (enhanced parallel port) mode
- ECP (extended capabilities port) mode
