Inetd

Short for Internet service daemon, inetd is used on many Unix and Unix-like servers (running operating systems such as Linux or BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution), for instance) that provides various Internet services. It listens for client requests on ports used by telnet, FTP, and POP3. Upon packet arrival, inetd responds either by spawning a new process with the appropriate executable to handle the request, or for simpler requests, handles the response itself. Because the Internet service daemon delegates many different Internet requests, it is often called a "super-server."
