Ingress Protection Rating
Updated: 01/31/2019 by Computer Hope
Often abbreviated as IP Rating, an Ingress Protection Rating is a scale that rates electronic devices on their protection against dust and liquid. Devices are rated on this scale by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). Different ratings show how many feet of water a device can be submerged in, with how dust affects the functions of the device.
How to read an IP rating
An IP rating consists of two digits. The first digit represents the device's protection against solids, and the second represents its protection against liquids. The solid rating has a range from 0-6, and the liquid rating has a range from 0-8. For example, the iPhone X has a rating of IP67, meaning it is completely dust resistant, and almost entirely water resistant.
