- American computer scientist best known for his contributions to early versions of the Unix operating system, in particular the sed stream editor.
- Contributed to the development of comm, qsort (quicksort C library), grep, cref (Unix cross referencing function), cu, and Datakit (a virtual circuit switch developed at Bell Labs).
- Created the McMahon system tournament, a tournament system for competitive games such as Chess and Go.
