Ludologist

A ludologist is a person that studies video games and the mechanics involved in gameplay. Ludologists focus on defining the mechanics and determining how well the mechanics work to make the game fun, balanced, and engaging. Some game developers consider themselves as ludologists if they focus on developing and programming a game's mechanics.
Ludologists feel that game mechanics make a game fun and popular and how they're received by the gaming community. By contrast, a narratologist is a person that studies a game's story and feels the story is more important in a game than game mechanics.
