Magnetic card reader
Updated: 11/12/2023 by Computer Hope
A magnetic card reader is a device that retrieves information from a magnetic card physically near to or swiped through it. The picture shows a good example of a card reader you may see at retail stores.
Tip
Always use the chip reader or NFC (near-field communication) instead of swiping the card. If swiping is required, ensure nothing appears broken or suspicious with the facade of the reader. Credit card skimmers can be placed on a reader to record every credit card used and allow others to fraudulently use your credit card.
