Microcom

Founded in 1980 by James M. Dow, Microcom, Inc. was a notable modem vendor during the 1980s, although never as big as the "big three," Hayes, U.S. Robotics, and Telebit.
Nevertheless, Microcom holds a special place in modem history. It introduced the MNP error-correction and compression protocols, which were widely used under license by most modem manufacturers in the 1990s. The company went public in 1987, and its outstanding shares were purchased by Compaq in April 1997. Today, Compaq is part of Hewlett Packard.
