Short for multipurpose Internet mail extensions, MIME is a standard that was first defined in 1992 which provides additional functionality for e-mail clients. MIME permits users to send non ASCII-based text attachments, and non-text files (e.g., compressed file, sound file, graphic file, document file, or video file) in an e-mail message. MIME also allows the body of an e-mail to be split into multiple sections.
