Founded on March 13, 1998, by Netscape, Mozilla is "a non-profit organization that promotes openness, innovation and participation on the Internet." Its stated purpose is to support and help lead the creation of open source web technologies. Its primary software product is the Firefox web browser.
When AOL (Netscape's parent) scaled back its involvement with Mozilla organization, the Mozilla foundation was launched on July 15, 2003, to ensure Mozilla could exist without Netscape.
