Founded in 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi, Nintendo Co., Ltd., also known as Nintendo, is a Japanese company that develops consumer electronics. It began as a producer of handmade playing cards, but by the 1970s it had transitioned to creating video games. In 1983, it released the FamiCom ("Family Computer"), which in 1985 was rebranded as the Nintendo Entertainment System. Today, Nintendo produces the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS video game systems, employs over 5,000 people, and is valued at approximately nine billion dollars.
