Short for organic light-emitting diode, OLED is an LED (light-emitting diode) used in flat-panel displays, is much thinner than LCD (liquid-crystal display), and requires less power to run. OLED uses an organic semiconductor material in the emissive elctroluminescent later.

In addition to flat-panel displays, OLED is used in mobile phones and smartphones, and handheld gaming devices.

The first OLED device was developed in 1987 by Ching W. Tang and Steven Van Slyke at Eastman Kodak. Since then, OLED technology has continued to improve, further reducing the power required to run an OLED device, making them more efficient.
