Founded in 1985 by UC San Diego professor Irwin M. Jacobs and several MIT alumni, Qualcomm is a telecommunications company. Qualcomm manufactures mobile communication equipment and devices, including cell phones, smartphones, and satellite phones. Qualcomm also manufacturers other products, including processors, semiconductors, tracking devices, and VR headsets.
Qualcomm also helped to develop several wireless communications standards, including cdmaOne (IS-95) and CDMA2000. Qualcomm also holds multiple patents for advanced 3G mobile technologies, including WCDMA, HSPA, and TD-SCDMA. Earnings from their patents make up a large portion of Qualcomm's total business income.
