Founded in May 2009 by Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey, Square, Inc. is a financial services, mobile payments company and merchant services aggregator based in San Francisco, California. A square credit card reader is plugged into the audio jack of smartphones and tablets, making them a mobile point of sale device.
