Short for Secure Sockets Layer, SSL is a protocol developed by Netscape and introduced to the public as SSL 2.0 in February 1995. It is used for transmitting private documents and transferring data encrypted, allowing information such as passwords or credit card information to be hidden. In 2015, SSL was officially deprecated and replaced by TLS (Transport Layer Security).
