Text messaging
Alternatively called SMS (short message service) or MMS (Multimedia Message Service), text messaging sends a digital note that is received on cell phones, smartphones, and other mobile devices. Text messages can include alphanumeric characters, or attachments like images and videos, depending on what texting platform is supported on your device.
SMS was featured as a top term of 1993.
How much does it cost to send a text message?
There may be an additional fee for text messaging, depending on the service provider. However, most mobile service providers include it in most service plans. If included, make sure it is unlimited or provides you with enough messages each month. If your plan has a set limit of messages and you exceed that limit, you are charged an additional fee for each message sent over the limit.
You can avoid service provider charges using an alternative messaging platform, like Facebook Messenger, while connected to Wi-Fi. If you're not connected to Wi-Fi, you use your phone's data plan when using any Internet service.
When was the first text message sent?
Neil Papworth sent the first SMS message on December 3, 1992. The 22-year-old engineer used his personal computer to send "Merry Christmas" via the Vodafone network to the phone of Richard Jarvis.
