Broderbund was founded in 1980 by Doug and Gary Carlston to market Galactic Empire and Galactic Trader computer games programmed by Doug. Broderbund released such popular programs as Myst and Riven. In 1998, Broderbund become a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Learning Company.
In 2006, The Learning Company became a brand of Houghton Mifflin Company, which later changed its name in 2017 to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

May 13, 1999 - Mattel, Inc. completed its merger with TLC (The Learning Company) and TLC became a division of Mattel. 1995 - The Learning Company was acquired by Softkey for $606 million.
