Uuencode

Uuencode and uudecode are software utilities that encode or decode files with Unix-to-Unix encoding, also known as uuencoding. Uuencoded files may be transmitted over text-only communications protocols, enabling binary data like software, images, and video to be transmitted by e-mail, IRC (Internet Relay Chat), or newsgroups. The binary data is converted to ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) for transmission, and then from ASCII back to binary when the data is received.
