Updated: 10/17/2017 by Computer Hope

Short for Virtual FAT or virtual file allocation table, VFAT is an implementation of FAT code included with Microsoft Windows 95 and later that allows file and directory names up to 255 characters in length. Before VFAT, Windows and MS-DOS only supported the 8.3 file naming format.
