VLSI

Short for very-large-scale integration, VLSI is an integrated circuit design introduced in 1980 with between 20,000 and 1,000,000 transistors and 10,000 and 99,999 logic gates. VLSI replaced LSI (large-scale integration).
What comes after VLSI?
The rate of how many transistors were included in ICs began to outpace how fast new names were being proposed, and using these names no longer made sense. Names like ULSI (ultra-large-scale integration) were proposed but rarely used. With today's processors that have billions of transistors, these naming conventions are no longer used or are being created.
