Short for Virtual Storage Extended, VSE is an operating system for IBM mainframe computers introduced in 1965. VSE is used for batch and online transaction processing applications in large corporations like Dell and Verizon.

Versions of VSE

  • DOS/VSE - Introduced in 1979 as an extended version of DOS/VS and was used with the IBM 4300 computers.
  • VSE/AF - Introduced in 1979.
  • VSE/SP - Version 1 was released in 1983, and version 2 was released in 1985.
  • VSE/ESA - Introduced in 1991.
  • z/VSE - Released in 2005.

In June 2021, 21st Century Software announced it had licensed the z/VSE source code from IBM with the intention of continuing to develop new operating system versions. The latest version of VSE is called VSEn.
