WEP

Short for Wired Equivalent Privacy, WEP is an encryption protocol defined in the 802.11b standard and introduced in September 1999 that helps protect a wireless network. WEP was later replaced by WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), an improved encryption standard introduced with 802.11i.

Note

Because of its many security vulnerabilities, the Wi-Fi Alliance retired WEP in 2004.
