Wi-Fi Direct
Updated: 12/31/2020 by Computer Hope
Created in 2008 by the Wi-Fi Alliance, Wi-Fi Direct is a method of connecting two devices wirelessly. Like Bluetooth, it can be used for remotely controlling a device, transferring files, or mirroring the display between devices. Wi-Fi Direct, unlike Bluetooth, uses the existing Wi-Fi connectivity hardware to create and connect to their local Wi-Fi networks without the need for a central router. In addition, Wi-Fi direct can transfer data at a rate almost 10 times faster than Bluetooth 4.0.
Examples of Wi-Fi Direct
- Controlling a GoPro camera using the smartphone app.
- Using AirDrop to send files between iOS devices.
- Using Wi-Fi enabled printers to wirelessly print pictures.
- Casting your screen to a TV using Miracast.
- Listening to music using high-fidelity wireless headphones.
