Yahoo!
Short for Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle!, Yahoo! was created in February 1994 by two Stanford University Ph.D. candidates David Filo and Jerry Yang. Today, Yahoo! is one of the most well-known and frequently visited pages on the Internet. On July 29, 2009, Yahoo! and Microsoft announced a 10-year search deal where the Yahoo! search would be replaced by Bing.
In 2008, Microsoft attempted to acquire Yahoo for over $44 billion, but Yahoo said the offer was too low. Later, on July 25, 2016, Verizon confirmed that it would purchase Yahoo for a much lower value of $4.48 billion. The deal would later be completed on June 13, 2017, and included the acquisition of Tumblr. The new company would create the Verizon Media Group (formerly Oath) that helped run over 50 media companies. The portions of Yahoo! not purchased by Verizon were renamed Altaba.
