Bit stuffing

Alternatively called bit padding, bit stuffing is the practice of adding extra information (bits) to a network or telecommunications data stream transmission. Bit stuffing may be done for any of the following reasons.

Reasons for bit stuffing

• Create an information packet that matches an expected length.
• Make sure network equipment configured to interpret or forward information that matches a particular length handles the packet correctly.
• Keep the appearance of a continuous stream of data flowing, as some telecommunications equipment requires a constant flow of data.
