Initially released in 2016, MetaMask is a popular cryptocurrency wallet that allows users to interact with the Ethereum blockchain. Whether used through the app or a browser extension, MetaMask serves as a storage medium for Ethereum and other ERC-20 tokens, and to access DApps (decentralized applications).

In addition to access, MetaMask provides a secure connection where users may broadcast transactions, send and receive crypto tokens, and store and manage account keys.

While MetaMask is primarily associated with Ethereum, it has expanded its support to other blockchains and networks, like Smart Chain, Binance, and Polygon. By November 2021, MetaMask's browser extension had over 21 million MAUs (monthly active users).
