Network engineer
Alternatively called a network architect, a network engineer designs and computer networks and then puts them into action. They select the data communications components and configure them to meet needs of individual users and corporations. This task is accomplished by utilizing modeling and analysis techniques to create reliable, high-performance networks that integrate WAN (wide area network), LAN (local area network), intranet, and Internet components.
Network engineers should not be confused with network administrators, who are individuals that perform day-to-day network support, rather than design and planning.
How do I become a network engineer?
Working as a network engineer requires a bachelor's degree in either network administration, computer science, or information technology. Additional education can include IT (information technology) certification for more focused learning. Examples of these programs include the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) and MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Engineer) certifications.
