Founded in September 2022, Temu is an online retailer and marketplace that sells a vast array of steeply-discounted items. The Chinese-owned company is registered in the Cayman Islands and based out of Boston, MA.

Selling anything from clothing to power tools, the platform allows vendors in China to directly sell and ship products to customers globally without intermediaries in the destination country. Consequently, affordability is dramatically increased for all purchasers.

Temu gained popularity quickly; their mobile app became the most downloaded on the Google Play Store. In addition to their pricing strategy, their success is partially attributed to running a pair of short ads during the Super Bowl and a significant social media campaign. Also, Temu offers free goods to select users via affiliate codes and through other methods like gamification.
