Wavelet compression

Wavelet compression is a lossy compression that reduce the file size of digital media such as still images, audio, and video. Unlike other compression schemes, wavelet compression achieves lower file sizes by looking for repeating patterns in the content and representing them mathematically in the file data. For example, a repeating pattern might be a starry night sky in a photograph, or a drumbeat in a song.

File formats that use wavelet compression include JPEG 2000 for still images, and Ogg Tarkin for video.
