J may refer to any of the following:

1. J is a keyboard key used with the keyboard shortcuts Alt+J, Command+J, and Ctrl+J.

2. With regular expressions, "J" is a regular expression flag to allow duplicate group names.

3. With Microsoft Excel and other spreadsheet programs, "J" is the tenth column of a spreadsheet. To reference the first cell in the column, you'd use "J1."

4. In Adobe Photoshop, J is a shortcut to select the Healing Brush tool. Pressing Shift+J cycles through related tools, including the Remove tool, Healing Brush tool, Patch tool, Content-Aware Move tool, and Red Eye tool.

5. In the phonetic alphabet, "J" is often pronounced as "Juliet."

6. J is the tenth letter of the English alphabet. The letter "J" comes after "I" and is followed by the letter "K." To create a capitalized "J," press Shift and J at the same time.

On a U.S. QWERTY keyboard, the "J" key is on the home row, to the right of "H" and left of the "K" key. See our keyboard page for a visual example of all keyboard keys.

Note

If the "J" key is not working on the keyboard, see: Some keys on my computer keyboard aren't working.

Tip

In ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange), the uppercase "J" is "074" in decimal (01001010 in binary). The lowercase "j" is "106" in decimal (01101010 in binary).

Tip

Doing the Alt code Alt+74 creates a capital "J," and Alt+106 creates a lowercase "j" character.

Tip

The number 5 on a phone keypad creates a "J" on a US phone.
