JPEG 2000, also known as JP2, is a wavelet compression codec standard for digital images and video. It was defined by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 2000, and like traditional JPEG-1 compression, JPEG 2000 defines both a file format and a stream format. Unlike JPEG-1, however, it uses wavelets to achieve a greater level of compression on images containing repeating patterns. It supports both lossy and lossless compression.
